Words With Friends – PC

Lots of people ask how or if you can play Words With Friends on a PC. The answer is, you can’t. But actually, you really can. There isn’t a PC version available, although it’s been rumored that Zynga will be porting Words With Friends to Facebook in the next year or so. While doing some testing the other day, I accidentilly found a way to play Words With Friends on my laptop. This is quite a tech-intensive process, so most people that can do this, probably wouldn’t want to mess with it anyway, but here goes:

1. Download and install the Android SDK, which includes an Android Emulator.
2. Download the Words With Friends .apk file.
3. Install the .apk file.
4. Run the emulator and launch WWF. (Make sure you have internet access on the PC you are running the emulator on)
5. Login with your credentials or create a new account.
6. Play Words With Friends on your PC (laptop or desktop!).

Again, this is one of those, you can but why would you? Still, the fact that it is way too much trouble to do this then it’s worth, isn’t the point.
The point is, it can be done.

For more detailed instructions on these steps, use Google. You can find plenty of existing tutorials.

Thanks for this! I have yet to upgrade to an Android or iPhone so I haven’t been able to play Words with Friends like everyone else.

I was surprised it worked to be honest…found version 3.35 of the WWF.apk from a google search. Just pasted it into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools folder.
Created a virtual device in the SDK manager (2.3.1) then launched it. After that, launch cmd.exe and navigate to the above directory (“cd” command) and type “adb install WWFFILENAME.apk” and enter. Should come up with “SUCCESS!”

Thanks, Kris! Installing Youwave now…if it works it’ll save me some time since now it keeps telling to upgrade to WWF 3.52 on the Android SDK. Maybe this way I can get the new .APK at least…

SteveK or Kris…I got it up and running. I could only find WWF 3.51 APK…Can anyone link me to the 3.52 APK? I can’t play it since it just keeps directing me to the update page, which I can’t do since I don’t have an android device that will allow me to download from the android market.

I’m having the same 3.52 problem. Because I have a Xoom, and Zynga decided to stop supporting Honeycomb, I can’t download it, ‘cuz that’s the only phone associated with my account.

  9. Hi,
I’m with Kevin’s comment – can someone post a link to a site with the v3.52 apk? I’ve got an android emulator running on my mac with v3.51 wwf, although like Kev constantly get the update screen (whereas previously I could play fine, with earlier versions).
As to why you would do this, I love the app (after seeing a few friends play it) but don’t have a smartphone, so the effort of installing the android sdk etc is definitely worth it. Downside is having to search for and re-install a new apk everytime they update it. If I had the skills I’d mod the 3.51 apk to cut out the update check, but unfortunately for me and kevy baby, I don’t.

Drag it into your folder (windows 7):

    C:\Users\Your Name\youwave\android apps

Then open up youwave and double click on the WWF logo in the top left white box…it’ll load then go to the menu and it should be at the bottom to select.

Actually, in response to the, “…you can but why would you…” I’m gonna have to say two things:

    1. You would if you wanted to play this game with friends but you don’t have or want an iPhone or Android
    2. It’s only more trouble than it’s worth because a couple of basic steps were left out.

Yes, I’m sure that there are tutorials but, really, all that needed to be included was:

    1. Make sure you have the JDK installed (the JRE by itself is not enough)
    2. Download and install the Android SDK
    3. Download the Words With Friends .apk file to the same directory in which you installed the android SDK
    4. Run the Android SDK and AVD manager and create an android virtual device
    5. Open a command prompt
    6. Navigate to the directory in which the emulator.exe file installed and type in “emulator @” (w/out quotes and GT/LT symbols)
    7. Once the emulator starts, at the command prompt, type in “adb install ” (w/out quotes and GT/LT symbols)
    8. Run the emulator and launch WWF. (Make sure you have internet access on the PC you are running the emulator on)
    9. Login with your credentials or create a new account.
    10. Play Words With Friends on your PC (laptop or desktop!).

So, 10 steps instead of 6. Not a huge difference, but quite a time saver for readers as long as you’re going to post this article.

As for the 3.52 apk file, you can go to XXXXXXXX.com and follow the domain name with backslash, w, backslash words-with-friends-apk.html and it will give you a whole bunch of links for the file.

      • Chris #

To clarify, you mean you’re having trouble with my step #6? If so, my fault. I should have reviewed my response. It turns out that using GT and LT signs messes up how your response shows up, and so the full command didn’t appear.

        Step 6 SHOULD read:

Navigate to the directory in which the emulator.exe file installed and type in “emulator @” (w/out quotes) followed by the name of the AVD you created in step 4. Do not put a space between @ and the name of your AVD.

Let me know if that helps.

        • Chris #

And, of course, I missed the fact that the GT and LT symbols also horked up my step #7. That step should read:

          7. Once the emulator starts, at the command prompt, type in “adb install ” (w/out quotes), space, then the path to the .apk file you downloaded. So, for example, something like:

          C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb install c:\users\your user name\com.zynga.words.v3.52.no.ads.mod.apk

Download the WWF apk first by one of the posts above (google “words with friends apk v3.52”)

    Then follow:

Drag it into your folder (windows 7):

    C:\Users\Your Name\youwave\android apps

Then open up youwave and double click on the WWF logo in the top left white box…it’ll load then go to the menu and it should be at the bottom to select.

I’m hopeful that my response to your other question resolved getting the emulator to run. If so, I can’t tell you that the file you’re using is the “wrong” one (I suspect that there is more than one .apk file that would work) but I can tell you that the one I used is named com.zynga.words.v3.52.no.ads.mod.apk. If you do a search using that file name, you’ll get a bunch of links, at least one of which should let you download it for free.

Again, let me know if this helps.

I kept trying the “drag & drop” routine too, but no avail!!! …. but I now have it working. Go to the com.zynga file that Chris mentioned above and click “save”. When it asks where, tell it Users/Yourname/Youwave/Androidapps file.

Then sure enough, when you open up your Android, it will be there!!!

It worked, it worked. I’m playing the game now!!!!

      Thank you all!

I had the same problem as Kit and others did. After downloading the file com.zynga.words.v3.52.no.ads.mod.apk and saving it to the proper folder it wouldn’t show in YouWave. I renamed the file to com.zynga.words.v3.52.apk and it worked immediately.

Installed on a DELL Latitude D610, w Win XP Pro V2002, Svc Pk 3.

    1. Downloaded and installed YouWave’s android emulator from the YouWave site.
    2. Downloaded the file com.zynga.words.v3.52.no.ads.mod.apk from a site referred by the shared file search engine, FileCrop.
    3. Renamed the file to com.zynga.words.v3.52.apk as suggested by Mark above.
    4. Moved the .apk file into the folder C:\Documents and Settings\(Your Username)\youwave\android apps
    5. Launched YouWave and double clicked on the WWF Icon in the white box on the left, then waited for WWF to load. This started the game in the interface window which is the emulation of the phone screen. This was suggested previously by Kevin on July 10th.
*Note that whenever I opened anything else in the YouWave MENU, the game seemingly disappeared from the screen with no way to retrieve it; perhaps shuffled into the background. This I solved by opening the MENU and clicking on the ADD option, scrolling the list of apps to find WWF, and selecting it. This placed a shortcut on the screen from which to reopen the game any time it disappears into the background. If this sounds elementary, it’s because I haven’t used an Android based device before.
    Best of Luck.

Seriously – NO, not everyone wants to use FACEBOOK! Believe me, a LOT of people are wanting to run things without being on Facebook,

I do NOT want to use Facebook; do NOT have an Android phone; do NOT have an iPad.

So, please don’t “assume” all people want to do things in one little sandbox!

Anyway, THANK YOU to those who have posted these instructions for “the rest of us” who want to play “outside the sandbox.”
